to start actually treasure hunting, you must complete this quest

Treasures and Tribulations 36 Eastern La Noscea (X:21 Y:21) NPC:H'loonh
http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Treasures_and_Tribulations (link for walkthrough, shouldnt need it though)

once completed, you can start treasure hunting yourself (you CAN find maps prior to completing this, but you cannot decipher or dig till its completed, or u can give them to a friend to do it)

5 maps exist currently, as of 2.1
So much like it says, the level 40's can only be obtained at level 40 nodes, 45 at 45 nodes, and the 50's at the 50 nodes. they all can appear at ANY 50 nodes. The piesteskin is believed to be the rarest and most valuable, the boarskin right behind that.

Timeworn Leather Map: Level 40 mature trees, lush vegetation patches, mineral deposits, rocky outcrops, and fishing holes.
Timeworn Goatskin Map: Level 45 mature trees, lush vegetation patches, mineral deposits, rocky outcrops, and fishing holes.
Timeworn Toadskin Map: Level 50 mature trees, lush vegetation patches, mineral deposits, rocky outcrops, and fishing holes (South Umbral Isles and Rathefrost only)
Timeworn Boarskin Map: Level 50 mature trees, lush vegetation patches, mineral deposits, rocky outcrops, and fishing holes (Reaver Hide and the Tangle only)
Timeworn Peisteskin Map: Level 50 mature trees, lush vegetation patches, mineral deposits, rocky outcrops, and fishing holes (Lake Tahtotl, Parata's Peace, and the North Shards only).

I stronly recommend at least 5 people for a piesteskin map hunt, and unless your very overgeared, at least 2 people for boarskin maps.
The rest can be soloed somewhat easily
